Eastwood Past & Present

In 2023, funded by a Gifford Foundation “What If” grant, we’re partnering with Eastwood’s favorite resident historian, David Haas (@SyracuseHistory), to document stories about Eastwood’s past & present.

Winter 2023: Volume 1

“Sure, I can talk, I LOVE Eastwood.” Those are the words of Kathleen Godlewski. I called Kathleen to take part in my first interview for our new column, Eastwood: Past & Present, in which I interview a current neighborhood resident to share their connection to and history with our community.

My name is David Haas and I am a local storyteller who has lived in Eastwood my entire life. This new column will focus on folks who have lived in Eastwood for many years. I want to find out, what is it about Eastwood that kept them here for so long or that got them to come back. You can expect to see this column in each quarterly newsletter.

Kathleen’s story starts on Shotwell Park. She was born in 1961 and lived at 143. She was the sole daughter in a family of six children. She attended private school locally, enjoying both Blessed Sacrament and then Bishop Grimes… (click the link below to access the full story).

Eastwood Events Calendar

ENA’s new website includes an events calendar that we’re adding to all the time. Want to know what’s coming up in Eastwood? Check it out at eastwoodneighbor.com/events.

Eastwood Memorial Day Parade is coming back!

ENA is partnering with Eastwood American Legion Post 1276 to bring back the Eastwood Memorial Day Parade!

Mark your calendars for May 29.

The only Memorial Day Parade in the City of Syracuse! Parade starts at 9:00 AM at Sacred Melodies Plaza (3501 James Street) and ends at Greenway Veterans' Memorial Park (2309 James St) with a Veterans' Memorial Ceremony. Bring your lawn chairs and set up anywhere along James Street to enjoy the parade!

If your group is interested in marching or driving in the parade, contact Jesse Harrington at 315-569-3722.

We are also looking for 13 volunteers (or 13 pairs if you want to volunteer with a friend) to help with traffic control along the route. Syracuse Police will manage traffic at major intersections, but at minor streets we need volunteers to set up barricades and, if needed, ask drivers to wait until the parade passes or go around the parade route. Volunteer and earn an Eastwood t-shirt! Click here to VOLUNTEER

If you are interested in making a donation to cover the costs of the parade, you can do so via the link below:

We need your help to make this event a success. We’re currently in need of volunteers to help on the day of the event, volunteers interested in helping plan the event, and homeowners willing to open their homes and/or gardens for the tour.

To volunteer, email info@eastwoodneighbor.com.

Do you or someone you know have a particularly magnificent home or garden? Please consider opening your home for the tour and showing off how beautiful Eastwood is. We will provide volunteers to assist with guiding and supervising visitors to your home. For more info, email info@eastwoodneighbor.com or call Katelyn at 559-816-7749.
