Return of Curb Appeal

It’s back! Curb Appeal is a friendly contest to acknowledge and celebrate neighbors who put extra effort into their homes, both large and small. 

Nominate your neighbors by August 1, 2023. ENA members will vote for winners at the ENA Annual Meeting in late-October. There will be one winner per "quadrant" of Eastwood (quadrants defined by James and Midler) and a winner for best “multi-family” (2+ units).

Board Nominations

ENA is an all volunteer organization and members of ENA’s board of directors volunteer their time and expertise to help keep Eastwood a great place to live, work, and play. If you’re interested in serving on the board, or know someone who fits the bill, please email a brief statement outlining any connections to Eastwood and any skills and/or interests to info@eastwoodneighbor.com no later than August 1. All candidates will be reviewed by ENA’s Nominations Committee who will nominate a slate of board members for election by ENA members at our annual meeting this October.

Eastwood Past & Present

In 2023, funded by a Gifford Foundation “What If” grant, we’re partnering with Eastwood’s own, David Haas, owner of @SyracuseHistory Instagram account, to document stories about Eastwood’s past & present.

“There is no other place I ever wanted to be.” Those are the words of Joan Decker, the second subject in my newest series titled, “Eastwood: Past & Present,” for the Eastwood Neighborhood Association, in which I interview a current neighborhood resident to share their connection and history with the Eastwood neighborhood. Her words ring true as told through her life in the neighborhood.

Joan turned 90 years old this month and for all but six of her 90 years, she has lived in the Eastwood area. For those six years, she lived in East Syracuse.

Joan’s unique connection to the area is that she has lived in many properties throughout Eastwood as a child. So many, that she has a hard time giving an exact number. “My father never owned a home,” she said. “He was a fixer-upper man, so he would rent a property and fix it up for the landlord and then be moved to another home to fix. I have lived from Teall to Thompson and everywhere in between,” she said. When reflecting upon her childhood in Eastwood, Joan remembers playing at a home on Mosley Drive. “I would play Nancy Drew with my friends. We used to get a newspaper and look for a crime to solve. Somedays there were no crimes in the paper and so we had nothing to solve.”

Eastwood Memorial Day Parade

The Eastwood Memorial Day Parade resumed after a three-year hiatus on Monday, May 29, on what happened to be the 75th anniversary of the Greenway Park Veterans’ Monument. Eastwood American Legion and Eastwood Lions Club raised money for it’s installation and it was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1948. This year’s parade was very well attended and participants included:

Eastwood: Village in the City Signs

Second Saturday Skateboard Sessions

We’re collaborating with Syracuse Parks & Rec to offer skateboard workshops for kids 8-13.

If you have a kid between 8 and 13 who wants to learn to skateboard or improve their skills, drop in at the East Woods Skate Plaza behind Huntington Elementary between 9:00 and 11:00 on the second Saturday of each month between now and September. Bring your own helmet and pads.

Walk Eastwood Challenge

Eastwood is Syracuse’s most walkable neighborhood. To prove it, we’re walking all 99 streets, 43 miles of roads, this summer. Yes, this walking challenge is partly about fitness and health, but even more it’s about getting outside, meeting each other, and getting to know the whole neighborhood - even parts you’ve never visited before.
